Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur
Special High Holiday Family Services are held for young families. The Yom Kippur service includes a dramatization of the Jonah story, acted out by the children.
This year the Religious School students meet together in a sukkah in one of our homes for holiday-related activities.
Some years we have a sukkah ramble, where school families ride around to different congregation sukkot with activities in each.
Dor Hadash’s annual Hanukkah on Ice celebration at Schenley Ice Rink: candlelighting, singing, potluck dinner, and ice skating. Each year we invite a group of about 30 new immigrant students, to learn about Hanukkah and to ice skate often for the first time, to join us.
The Purim Megillah reading is always a blast: costumes, parodies that include the children, and the story of Esther.
Classes meet around the dining room tables in the homes of school families. The informal atmosphere is part of the positive learning environment.
Summer Picnic Services
During the summer, we hold monthly outdoor Shabbat services and potluck picnics.
School Social Action Projects
Working with the Congregation’s Social Action Committee, School families help G-Tech, an organization that turns vacant lots into gardens in troubled neighborhoods. Preparing the ground, planting and caring for the gardens: it’s wonderful to be outdoors working for a good cause.
School Families have served meals at Ronald McDonald House, and worked cleaning up the riversides with Allegheny Cleanways.
